Mammography is a special type of x-ray imaging used to create detailed images of breast. Mammography uses low dose x-ray; high contrast, high-resolution and an x-ray system designed specifically for imaging the breast. Mammography plays an important role in early detection of breast cancers.
This test can find 85-90% of breast cancers in women and discover a lump up to two years before it can be felt. Once a lump is found the mammography can be a key factor in determining if the lump is cancerous. When should I get a Mammogram?
Most physicians recommend women 40 years of age receive a screening mammogram every one to two years. Beginning at age 50, mammography should be performed every year. Patients at high risk for breast cancer (especially those with family history) should consult their physician about beginning annual mammograms prior to age 40.
